The Advocacy Committee has lots of exciting updates and reminders.
Information about National Day of Action 2016 in DC:
This year, National Day of Action will take place on Thursday April 7, 2016 in Washington DC. This year’s NDA theme is:
“Reform not Rhetoric – Immigration in Election Year 2016”
Some of our priorities this year will include:
- Our economy and businesses need immigration reform;
- Refugees and asylum seekers need greater protection; and
- End family detention NOW
Immigration is already the hottest topic in this presidential election year. Let’s make sure the facts don’t get lost in all the political noise. This is where we need YOU! Please join us on Thursday, April 7th, as hundreds of AILA members from around the country will descend on Washington D.C. to educate Congress on immigration for National Day of Action. Last year our Chapter sent 19 people and participated in 17 congressional visits. We are hoping to match that this year! If you have never been before, consider taking part in this unforgettable experience.
Armed with lobbying training from AILA National staff and your clients’ stories you will educate and influence Members of Congress and their staff to move away from the rhetoric and push immigration reform forward this election year.
Registration is now open and it is best to get signed up as soon as possible!
NOTE: This year we are very fortunate to have two $300 scholarships available that we will be able to give out to those that apply to help offset some of the costs associated with the travel to DC. For those that are interested in applying for this scholarship, they will need to speak with Katie and Kelli. In terms of these reimbursements, we will be considering the following factors: whether they work for a non-profit, whether this is their first time attending, financial need, etc.
Local Lobbying Efforts—Meeting with the Local Congressional Offices
Unfortunately, AILA’s National Day of Action has scared off the members of the House. On April 7, 2016, the Senate will be in session, but the members of the House will be in-district that week.
We would love to have some of our AILA members who are unable to make the journey to DC set-up some local visits with their members of Congress. We will be able to help coordinate the members who are interested and help provide some training and materials to make this as easy as possible.
All you have to do is let us know! Please email the Chicago Chapter Advocacy Committee chairs, Katie (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Kelli (Kfennell@slawus.com) if you would like to be part of the local lobbying efforts.
Thanks for all of your advocacy efforts!
